Cannington Phone Exchange
Introduction:

The project consisted of the replacement of redundant mechanical plant to accommodate the increasing equipment heat load due to the expanding Telstra network, preparations for NBN and to provide the exchange with a level of redundancy to safe guard against plant or equipment failure.

Project Description:

Two (2) new 70kW packaged units and associated ductwork, electrics and controls.

  • Full structural assessment of existing building to accommodate new plant.
  • Jako undertook all builders works including structural steel design and fabrication, penetrations and making good.
  • Upgrade of building management system to incorporate full control and access to new mechanical plant.
Technical Challenges:

Jako Industries was engaged on this project as the head contractor.

This arrangement brought about numerous challenges as the exchange location is located amongst residential housing. Noisy works, parking, site security and logistics all added complexity to an already sensitive building.

The Cannington telephone exchange is one of the larger exchanges in the Perth metro area and as such required works to be undertaken in a very delicate and unobtrusive manner. It is imperative that dust and moisture be kept to an absolute minimum once inside the exchange for protection of the telecommunications infrastructure.

All ductwork including plant was required to be external to the building to maximize equipment space within the building. The arrangement of air delivery into the building was via hot and cold isles to effectively move cool air across the equipment racks.

Jako Industries has had a long association with Telstra and has successfully completed many exchanges and telco hubs over the past 40 years.
