University of Western Australia — Science Library
Introduction:

The project consisted of the construction on a new Biological sciences library on the Crawley Campus of the University of Western Australia.

Project Description:

New Biological Science Library and upgrade of existing HVAC systems in existing Science Library adjacent to new library. Mechanical services consisted of:

  • Central fire tube boiler and heating water pump
  • Chilled water air handling units and heating coils
  • Variable air volume (VAV) boxes serving spaces
  • General ventilation fans
  • Built-up return air plenums
  • Chilled water and heating water reticulation piping complete with insulation and cladding
  • Mechanical services switchboards and electrical services
  • TAC control system and integration with university’s existing BMS system
Technical Challenges:

For this project, Jako Industries encountered space constraints in the plant room due to extensive ductwork, piping and built-up return air plenums. The retrofit of the existing library and an estimate of existing services could not be ascertained until all ceilings were removed, which made shop drawings difficult to produce.
